To ensure that the mega-fight happen, Manny “pacman” Pacquiao offered a piece of advice for Floyd “money” Mayweather Jr.: Go find a promoter.
The fighting congressman of the Philippines said that he is not running away from a clash with Mayweather, stressing that he and promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank are ready and open to hold talks with a group that can represent the unbeaten American fighter in the negotiations.
“Floyd Mayweather wants a guaranteed purse so what he has to do is get a promoter who can give him the guarantee,” said the 8-Division world champion Manny Pacquiao, underlining the fact that, unlike Mayweather, his house is in order.
“I don’t have problems getting a guarantee because I have a promoter who will give me my guaranteed purse,” Pacquiao said.
Beside from the guaranteed purse, Pacquiao added he and Mayweather will also get an equal share in the pay-per-view, gate receipts and broadcast rights to further increase their earnings in the event Arum is targeting for the end of May, and not on the May 5 date that Mayweather wants it to be held.
Although Mayweather has fought under Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), he is not under contract with the Oscar De La Hoya-owned outfit.
“there is no problem on our part… the problem is on Mayweather’s.” said Top Rank boss Bob Arum, who is in the country to discuss Pacquiao’s next fight in June.
“Mayweather needs somebody on his side that’s going to guarantee his purse. Mayweather has nobody on his side and GBP is not going to guarantee his purse.”
Both Pacquiao and Arum declined how much money is involved in the guaranteed purse but it’ll be safe to say that it’ll be way more than the $23 million that Pacquiao received when he fought Juan Manuel Marquez in a controversial fight last November 12, 2011.
Arum doubts whether somebody is willing to take a risk for Mayweather.
“Nobody has the financial wherewithal to guarantee Mayweather’s purse,” said the hall of fame promoter Bob Arum.
Still, Arum is not closing the doors on the possibility of staging the fight that the world wants to see as he will have his final meeting with Pacquiao just hours before he heads back to Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon.
In case a fight with Mayweather can’t be salvaged, Pacquiao will choose from among Juan Manuel Marquez, Tim Bradley, Lamont Peterson and Miguel Cotto his foe for June 9.
Pacquiao said everyone’s being looked with fairness, including a rematch with Cotto at 147 lbs.
