Nonito Donaire (29-1,18 KO’s) grab the IBF super bantamweight belt through a onesided fight against South African champion Jeffrey Mathebula (26-4-2) last July 07, 2012 at Home Depot Center n Califonia, it was the 28th victory of the Filipino flash as a professional boxer.
A four division world champion Nonito Donaire born in the Philippines, but raised in California’s Bay Area, connected a variety of power punch and dictated the fight round by round. At the fourth round the Filipino Flash got Mathebula with his ferocious left hook that sent the South African fighter into canvasbefore the bell sound to end the round.
Mathebula used his height and reach advantage and a tremendous work rate to keep the bout competitive. It was Mathebulas’s jab keep off the Filipino Flash launching a variety of power punch. Even though, Nonito Donaire was not able to knock out Mathebula, but his ring performance was enough to win in all the three judges’s scorecards.
“It was tough. He got me off the jab really well,” Donaire said. “That jab really took me out of my power range. He’s a great champion. He wouldn’t let me get inthere and let me work.”
Three judges favored the Filipino Flash showed in their score cards 117-110, 118-109 and 119-108.
“I attacked, I had good balance, and I had a lot of fun in there,” Donaire said. “My goal is to be a unified champion. I want to unify all of the belts at 122 (pounds).”
